Construction of the Common has started! The foundations for Overlook Pavilion, which will be nestled at the edge of the conservation land and trails, are being excavated and the trees below the overlook are being selectively removed to provide a great view of the lower Common from the Overlook above. The post & beam pavilion will be constructed from a kit on the foundation and paver floor, all part of an Eagle Scout project. Soon you will also see the fill being delivered in preparation for the remediation and build-out of the lower area of the common.
Great progress is also being made on the investigation and remediation aspect of the project. The Phase 2 report was completed in July, fully defining the type and extent of the contamination. The report is the basis for a detailed risk assessment and the determination of the methods and extent of remediation which will be required and will be reported in the Phase 3 report, currently underway for completion in early September.
The detailed design of the Common is being developed in parallel with the Phase 3 environmental report to assure that the design is aligned with the with the remediation needs. The design will be the basis for wetlands permitting and site review, both of which are expected to be completed in September. As soon as the wetlands and site review are completed, the excavation part of the remediation will start, soon followed by the overall fill and grading of the lower Common. All are scheduled to be completed and the site again “put to bed” with grass planted before the snow flies. This stage of the construction will be less costly than originally anticipated due to the number of firms and individuals who have committed to in-kind donations of services and material. We’ve recognized the in-kind donors along with our financial donors on the Bolton Town Common website.
We are making excellent progress in our fundraising (stay tuned for a major update on that front soon!) However, less than 10 percent of households have participated and we need many more to help us reach our goal . You can contribute in many ways:
First, if you haven’t already, please consider a pledge of support. You can find more information how you can pledge or donate now on our website. And be sure to check out the name recognition opportunities so you can leave your mark on the Common!
Join us for the Bolton 5K Run/Walk and Family Festival on October 10th at 10am. The event will be hosted at the Schartner Farm in Bolton and include not only the 5K but a number of activities and festivities for all ages, such as local BBQ, live music, corn maze, kids’ games and more. If your family or your business wants to sponsor the race, packages begin at $250. We already have two dozen family and organizations on board! Finally we are selling a limited number of 5K support t-shirts for kids and adults. They are awesome and a great way to help spread the word. (Note these are different than the running shirt you'll get at the race if you register soon).
A neighborhood dinner series is being launched this fall. A number of residents are opening up their homes for small group get-togethers where we will talk in more depth about the future of the Town Common. If you are interested in hosting or attending one of these dinners, email us.
Please join us in supporting the Our Common Cause through donations to this very unique and important community placemaking initiative!
